Pre-Coding and Making: Open-ended Problem Solving
The development of pre-coding skills has learners actively practicing sequencing, classifying, and logic. Integrating this development with hands-on building and making involves those learners with an excellent opportunity for creative problem-solving.
My initial academic and work experiences were in Geology. A two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching in Malaysia converted me to science education. Since I had to teach in Malay and there were no Malay-language textbooks, I quickly saw the value of hands-on experiences and questioning as opposed to lecturing and assigning readings. Recently I have been involved in developing makerspaces in K-12 schools as well as public libraries and environmental organizations.
