Lifting All Children: Montessori as Social Justice Education

My talk will provide an overview of theories on social justice education and their overlap with Montessori methods and philosophy. I will also discuss empirical evidence on Montessori as a way to reduce the academic achievement gap for low-income students of color and discipline disproportionality between White and Black students. Finally, I will discuss challenges and important considerations for Montessori in the public sector.

I am a second year graduate student at the University of Virginia studying developmental psychology with Dr. Angeline Lillard. Before starting graduate school, I worked as a first grade and then fifth grade math and science teacher at a public charter school in East Cleveland, Ohio. My experience as a teacher informs much of my research interests which focuses on Montessori education, particularly in low-income and minority neighborhoods.
