For Montessori Ed Week
A Quote a Day.......

MONDAY
“Education is the help we must give to life so that it may develop in the greatness of its powers. To help those great forces which bring the child, inert at birth, unintelligent and unsympathetic, to the greatness of the adult being, this should be the plan of education.....”
Maria Montessori, The 1946 London Lectures, p. 6

TUESDAY
“And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process, which develops spontaneously in the human being.  It its not acquired by listening to words, but in virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his environment.  The teacher's task is not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special environment made for the child.
Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, p. 7

WEDNESDAY
“The feeling that they are making a real social contribution gives the children a sense of dignity
and security, and they lose their anxiety and the need to be noticed and appreciated. When
they reach this stage, they are quite indifferent if you praise their efforts. The child’s own sense
of responsibility unfolds little by little, and he begins to recognize obligations to himself, his
family, and society.”
Mario Montessori of Second Plane Children

THURSDAY
“Imagination was not given man for the simple pleasure of fantasizing … Imagination does not
become great until man, given the courage and strength, uses it to create.
Maria Montessori, From Childhood to Adolescence
“… by observing the forms of imagination that are linked with creativity, that is, the forms of
imagination that are directed toward reality, we find that the boundary between realistic
thinking and imagination is erased. “
L. S. Vygotsky, The collected works of L. S. Vygotsky

FRIDAY
“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual
development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of
young people to understand the times in which they live.”
Maria Montessori, Education and Peace

SATURDAY
“Peace is a practical principle of human civilization and social organization that is based on the
very nature of man … And because it is based on man’s nature, it is a constant, a universal
principle that applies to all human beings. This principle must be our guide in building a science
of peace and educating men for peace.”
Maria Montessori, Education and Peace
The Virginia Montessori Association is a non-profit (501(c)3) that was established in 2015 to bring Montessorians in Virginia together and to offer a community from which we all could benefit.  Administrators, educators, parents and other supporters can connect, inform and communicate in a way that is of value to all.
