Classroom Floater Assistant Job Description
Floater Responsibilities:
Provide classroom coverage during staff lunch breaks, planning time, and other scheduled breaks to maintain required child-to-staff ratios
Assist children with toileting routines and diapering as needed, following proper health and safety protocols
Support lead teachers with classroom activities, transitions, and daily routines across multiple age groups
Supervise children aged 18 months to 6 years during indoor and outdoor activities
Step in as needed during staff absences or high-volume periods
Maintain continuity of classroom schedules and activities during coverage periods
Afternoon Extended Care Responsibilities:
Supervise and engage children in age-appropriate activities during afternoon extended care hours
Create a safe, welcoming, and structured environment for children awaiting pick-up
Plan and implement recreational activities, games, and free play opportunities
Monitor children during snack time and outdoor play
Communicate with parents during pick-up respectfully and professionally as needed
Maintain attendance records and ensure proper sign-out procedures
General Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized learning environment
Supporting the carefully prepared environment—a cornerstone of Montessori education—through laundering, washing and sanitizing dishes and materials, dusting, mopping, and general upkeep of classrooms, contributing directly to the success of our children, staff, and school community
Comply with all WFMA and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and WFMS policies and regulations
Understand that the needs of children, staff, and school are dynamic and may shift from day to day; maintain flexibility and adaptability in response to changing priorities
Communicate effectively with teaching staff, parents, and administration
Respond appropriately to children's individual needs and behavioral guidance
Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as required
Understand and support Montessori philosophy and pedagogy in all interactions with children and materials; complete required Montessori training and professional development as necessary
Document and report any safety concerns, incidents, or child welfare issues to the administration or Virginia authorities immediately
